Mr. Iyengar is widely recognized as one of the premier yogis responsible for introducing yoga to the west and has been named one of the 100 most influential people in the world today. My Iyengar is now 86 years of age and although he officially retired from daily teaching in 1984, he continues to direct medical classes and attend special events. Iyengar yoga uses specific props such as bolsters, blankets, foam blocks and straps as aids to help the body to open and stretch. This style of practicing yoga is methodical and progressive, and emphasizes precision, detailed correctness and absolute safety. The stretching postures have been structured and categorized to allow students of all levels of fitness and ability to progress safely from basic to more challenging postures, to gain flexibility, strength and sensitivity in mind, body and spirit.
