Research has shown that having a solid core is the foundation of a healthy body. The core consists of any muscles that provide the foundation for the joints and the resultant movement to occur. Without a solid core, muscles that are not designed to stabilize get called into action and the end result can be pain and loss of function. The abdominal and deep back muscles are the core muscles of the trunk. Core stabilization work begins with the ability to isolate the muscles and then is progressed to include contraction of the muscles while performing a wide range of tasks - everything from standing to sport specific tasks. Therapy balls, rocker boards, pulleys, weight training may be used as an aid in progressing the overload on the trunk muscles. Everyone can benefit for core stabilization exercises.
